Hazardous Weather - Campus Closed/Remote Operations

Dear Howard University Community,

Howard University has updated its operational status to “REMOTE OPERATIONS” for Friday, January 19, 2024. Please read this email in its entirety, as it provides clarity for faculty, staff, and students on the University's operational and instructional status.

Operational Status for Friday, January 19

  • The University’s main and west campuses are closed to all non-essential personnel. Only critically essential personnel are expected to be on campus. Please contact your supervisor if further clarification is needed.
  • All other employees are expected to work remotely. If you are unable to work remotely, please inform your supervisor and use accrued paid leave.
  • The remote workday for all non-instructional services will proceed within the normal hours of operation, without a weather delay.

Instructional Status for Friday, January 19

  • Classes that are normally scheduled for in person instruction are being moved to online instruction. Please contact your instructor for further information on how you will meet in a virtual environment, at the normal meeting time, or how you will make up for missed instruction.
  • Classes that are normally scheduled for online instruction will proceed in a virtual environment at their usually scheduled time.

Auxiliary Services:
The following operations and auxiliary services will observe an amended schedule on Jan. 19

In preparation for the winter storm, Howard University Faculty Practice Plan has elected “MODIFIED CLOSED” operating status. There will be no on-site visits. The clinic teams will contact patients who have been selected for telemedicine visits. Staff will not report on-site.

  • The mailroom will open at 11 a.m.
  • The bookstore will open at 11 a.m. 
  • University libraries and i-labs are closed.
  • WHUR and WHUT will continue their usual hours of operation.

Shuttle Service: Please view the shuttle app for real time information on the updated schedule, as the shuttle buses cannot operate if local road conditions are hazardous.

We encourage everyone to stay informed about the weather conditions through the National Weather Service or other local media. Official Howard University updates will be communicated through university email, the Bison Safe app, social media channels, and the website. Please update your Bison Safe application in the app store to ensure you are receiving the latest information.
